Ian Brackenbury Channell was appointed Wizard of Christchurch in 1982 and proclaimed Wizard of New Zealand by Prime Minister Mike Moore in 1990. He was made a Queen's Service Medallist for services to the community. For decades he stood on a ladder in Cathedral Square and told the country what he thought of it, and the country, mostly, loved him for it.
I met him in that square when I was at a low point in my life. He put me back on my feet. Later I filmed him — in Christchurch, in Vanuatu where he was invited to bless the islands, in Abu Dhabi and in England — and this book is the story of the film and the man, told by someone who calls him father.
Narrated in the documentary by Mike Moore, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

"At first sight of the pointed hat you think, what's going on here? Then you listen to him. In one sentence he can talk about ten things. He is funnier than Billy Connolly, and I don't say that lightly."
The book goes deeper than the film could: the Suffolk and Bromley years that crossed my own path decades later, the Lunar Lodge in Vanuatu, the flight on which the cabin crew announced a real wizard on board, and what he said to me in Cathedral Square that lifted a weight I had carried for years.
